Macy's Downtown at Christmas is always an exciting time for young and old. My Hubby and I went to lunch the other day. I work seven days a week now till Christmas. So before I started we went to The Walnut Room in Macy's ~

This is an amazing place to visit. It's worth the wait in line. The tree is lite up in it's glory ~ The service is good and the food is excellent! I always have the Lobster Bisque and it is to die for! The Salmon was tasty and the creamy chives mashed potatoes are the BEST! We shared the Frango Mint Ice Cream Pie. It was AMAZING! There is a fairy princess that walks and places fairy dust on the tables with children dinning. I asked for a menu but was only given a copy. So I decided to show pictures of this enchanting place. If you come to Chicago this is a must have spot to dine in.

I've been going to Marie's Pizza since the 1970's. And the decor still has not changed. This is a nostalgic place. The 1950's booths in the bar and dinning room, I believe are original. But I'll say the food has changed. Go there for the thin crust pizza. They no longer serve wine coolers. Their cokes are a little on the flat side. The waitress gives you a little caraf so the glass stays full. They have a full bar and a liquor store. But do not have wine coolers?? They over cook their pork chops. So, do you have to order pork rare? The Italian beef is served without ajus on the side. Believe me it needed help. I asked about the Tiramisu and was told it came from a very good bakery. The Tiramisu was served frozed, it was dry and tasteless. The hubby said it had a refrigerator taste. The waitress was very busy. We went on a Friday night and they had entertainment. So the place was packed. I saw many families with children. When you go in you have to enter through the liquor store and on the wall is a charming vintage picture of "Marie's" looks like it dates back to the 1950's. If you are a Christmas person go there during the Christmas Holidays. This place has the dinning room filled AND I do mean filled with red and gold foil decorations hanging from the ceiling throughout. After your holiday shopping stop in for a pizza and enjoy the decorations!

Panda Express ~I have never eaten in a Panda Express before and when I saw one was opening near my house I wanted to try it. I love Chinese food. Who doesn't? My Hubby and I tried it and we liked it. However the Honey Walnut Shrimp that's been advertised a ton of times on tv was what I really had high hopes for.........It Fell Short. It was cold, too sweet and the walnuts were hard as rocks. Plus you have to pay a buck more for the shrimp dishes. The noodle side dish was tasty. I'd order that for sure next trip. Don't order the Broccoli Beff unless you want 90% Broccoli and 10% Beef. This was good but..... I wanted a bit more of the beef. The Spring rolls were tiny, you get two. They were OK. Nothing to write home about. The Kung Pao Chicken was tasty. For fast food Chinese this is good. We will go back and try some of the other dishes.

Miller's Pub Chicago ~ 134 S Wabash in Chicago

Plan to have to wait in line. This place can get busy. Now when you get a craving for Greek Egg Lemon soup ~ go here! They serve the BEST in Chicago! They serve a basket of breads with tasty bagel chips that pares well with this yummy soup. If they don't bring the basket. Ask for it. They have a full bar and it's just about always full. The service is good. Coffee and sodas are OK. I've had the Denver omelet for lunch and it was good. I've tried their daily dinners and they are tasty. The hot beef sandwich is a hearty meal. But I did have to send back a ham and Swiss on white back several times. I got it grilled then toasted before they got it right. This is a fun place to stop in for lunch after going to Macy's. Think about this place after Christmas shopping this Holiday season. It's very close to the Brown Line Wabash and Adams stop. But don't ask for rice pudding. They don't carry it anymore.

Piazza Bella a great Italian spot in the heart of Roscoe Village in Chicago, right down the street from Jazz'e Junque. It is a small hidden gem. Plus they deliver! Open for lunch and dinner. Serving The BEST Calamari in Chicago! The Bruschetta Romano is very good. The drinks are good. Their pizza's are tasty. My hubby LOVES the Linguine and clams. The Chicken Vesuvio is also a fav of my Hubby. The Caprese salad is a goood starter for a dinner or pizza. The Tiramisu is VERY tasty. Make sure you try it. The service is supurb ~ Piazza Bella is a little bit of Italy in Chicago.

Do you remember the "Ed Sulivan" Show on Sunday nights? I do but if you have not... There was a mouse named: "Topo Gigio" he spoke with Ed and joked around. Well, in Chicago there is a good Italian Ristorante on Wells Street called: "Topo Gigio". There is a cool vintage collection of this lovable Mouse on display above the bar. The buss Boys wear tee shirts with Topo on front and back of their shirts. My Hubby and I go here and enjoy ourselves very much! The Calamari is to die for. We've always tried their specials of the day and was never dissappointed. They have tasty Italian dishes, Great fish dishes and the steak my Hubby had was Huge! The service is good and so is the coffee. We REALLY like the Tiramisu. We both agree this is the BEST we have ever had! There is metered street parking and vallet parking next door. You can eat in their huge dinning room. Or on a warm day or evening you can eat out in front. We've always ate inside because whenever we've eaten there is was a bit chilly outside.

Do you like fish? Bonefish Grill is a very nice place to enjoy fish. We have eaten at the one located in Skokie many times. They also have Fillet Mignon, burgers and chicken. But I only eat eat fish here. Why go to a fish place and eat beef?? Go on Wednesday. The Bang Bang shrimp is only five bucks. I love this! It is a great starter to share. I like the spices they cook it in or add to it. Served on a lettuce salad with chop sticks.You are served a small warm loaf of bread served with Olive Oil. Yum! The $5.00 Bar-Fresh Cocktails are a must have! They have several. I like the Rum Punch. The coffee is good too. They are having a special right now for $20.00. You start off with your choice of a starter. We shared the Asian Dumping. They were tasty. A salad and a fish entree' with carrots and your choice of a side. The Garlic whipped potatoes are to die for. We just about always share the warm Jamaican Coconut pie. It is the best dessert at Bonefish. Make a reservation. Because you just can't walk in and get a table in this busy ~ crowed place. The dinning room is large and a little dark and so noisy you can never hear the music playing. I think you can come in off the street and eat at the bar tho. Bonefish Grill (Skokie) is located in a strip mall. It is a nice place to eat for a special occasion. I can't wait to go back again!

Superdawg Drive - In
Chicago & Wheeling

This place has been around since the late 1940's. I remember eating here when I was a girl. You drive in a stall in their parking lot and click on the order button. You are then greeted with a "Hi Ya" and they take your order which is made when you order it. So it's fresh. A Car Hop yep they still have the car hop bring your meal out on a tray. You then pay and enjoy your tasty meal. I like the hot dogs the best where you'll get a slice of green tomato on it. Fries are piled high in the Superdawg box. I've tried the burgers, Polish and fish san but go there for the dogs. I felt the Root Beer Float fell short. So I get the Root Beer by itself which is good. Don't forget to tip the car hop!! Inside they have "Super dawg" tee shirts and collectibles. If you like nostalgia check out this place! I give Superdawg a 4 cookie jar review!

Orange Garden Restaurant ~ 1942 W Irving Park
Orange Garden ~ Authentic Cantonese Dishes On Irving Park in Chicago. If you are looking for an original Chinese 1930's type restaurant with good good fashion recipes stop in at the Orange Garden. No you won't find Sushi here. But what you will find is an authentic walk back in time Asian restaurant with good food. My hubby is a Hot and Sour soup kind of guy. This fell short. But the egg rolls, pot stickers, fried shrimp and Crab Rangoons made up for it. The Kung Pao Chicken was very good and tasty. The Chicken Egg Foo Young was very good too. We were served the traditional hot tea with our meal and it ended with Fortune cookies and Almond cookies on the house. Now where do you get anything on the house anymore? Will we go back? Sure will!
This is a walk back in time spot. I really liked the authentic decor and tasty Asian food. Prices were good. Atmosphere is too kool!

Dear Franks in the Village Crossing Shopping Center in Niles

This is a very friendly busy place. Since the hubby likes Hot Dogs we decided to try this place. I think we've been here at least five times since June.
They can char your dog or Polish for you. They serve tasty Vienna Beef dogs and Polish. I tried the Turkey burger. I think it was more bread then anything else. So do add onion and whatever else you like. They offer onions, lettuce, pickles, Gardiner, mustard & mayo. At the end of the order you can tell them what you'd like. The mac and cheese is nothing to brag about. Fries and drinks are OK. They have seasoned waffel fries. They look good. I think I'll try them next time. I tried the steak san special. I could take it or leave it. I think the dogs are the best deal in this spot where pictures of people that have eaten here are hanging along with Chicago pictures. There's a large tv hanging near the ceiling it's always had the news on I think. The menu is large. There are salads, baked potatoes, Veggie stir fry on Pita, burgers, chops, desserts and much more. They have a lot of to go orders and many people eat in. We've done both. They have a kids menu too. Yes, I plan to go back.

Portillo's Hot Dogs ~ Well they have more then hot dogs. But they do have good hot dogs! Yeah you do wait in line to order and again in line to get your order picked up. But it's worth the wait. They have booths and tables and every time we are there.... they are busy! The one in Skokie has an outdoor patio for the warmer weather. The Char-broiled chicken sandwich on a croissant is to die for. BUT order the mayo on the side. If you don't it could get a little messy. My hubby likes the Maxwell Street Polish. He likes the char - grilled flavor. I grew up going to Maxwell Street as a little girl with my dad. We'd get a Polish and a root beer. However I don't really care for the char now. Ugh! I like the Beef - n - Cheddar on a Croissant. It goes well with Gardinar. Again, order it on the side or it will get greasy. I eat mine with a fork and knife. It's tasty! I found the Grilled Vegetable sandwich was fair. They also have several types of fish sandwiches. They were a good substitute for meat. Soup and salads are also on the menu. Yes, there are people that will order a salad. They are pretty good. Everyone just loves the Chocolate cake. Well, I've had better. The drinks are OK. The fries and onion rings are so - so. The Chicken Tenders are pretty good. The Skokie location has a drive thru. I'm not sure if the other's have them or not. Portillo's are located all over Illinois. My Hubby and I went to breakfast this morning and we went to a place we have both been to many times. It was a 24 hour smoking place. But when smoking was no longer. They went to early dinner then close. Now they are breakfast and lunch only now. We used to go on Fridays for the fish & chips.
I really hate as soon as my butt hits the seat the server is asking if I want coffee. I wasn't sure. I said "no". She stood there waiting to know what I was going to drink. I told her I'd tell her when I ordered. I was not given anything to drink. Then I had to ask for the drink. Was she punishing me? I got the iced tea, it was good. The lemons were very fresh. Hubby's cup of coffee was never empty. The buss boy kept it coming. Drinks were good.
I could see my Rye toast sat there (at the kitchen window) for a good ten minutes before the omelet came up. So it was very cold and the butter never melted. (I like to butter my own toast) I was not happy with the way it was cooked but the server didn't come back till we got the check. I've been here before and it was OK to good. Today I give it two cookie jars. Will I go back? Yeah, it's near my house. Will I order a Denver omelet? I don't think so.

Roger and I had dinner the other night at Mia Figlia in Edgebrook. The wine list could be larger. But I was able to find a wine to my liking. We started out with the Calamari. It was very good. But the dipping tomato sauce was weak. They brought out warm bread. The server said they bake it fresh. However eat it fast or it gets hard! We both had the Linguini and Pescatore con Finocchio. It was tasty. The service could have been better. We ordered coffee, it was strong. We had to flag a busboy to get it for us. Just as we had to flag down the server for a second glass of wine. When we finally got the wine the server had to smell the glass to make sure it was what my husband ordered. Hmmmmm. The Taramissu was very good, creamy and tasty. I rate this resturant 3

My Hubby and I go out to eat often in and around Chicago. We have gone to Omego many times over the years. It's a good breakfast, lunch and dinner place to dine. They have a large bakery counter when you first walk in to check out what you'd like to have there or take home. The baking is done on their premises. You are also given a bread basket with several types of breads and muffins. Yum! The service is good and wait time isn't too bad. Coffee is good but the cokes are a bit weak in flavor. They have several types of soups daily too. The daily specials are tasty. With a full dinner you get to go and pick out your dessert. It's a 24~7 place too. I rate Omega 4

Heavy Rain in Illinois ~

The Illinois area has had some heavy rains, storms and flooding. Basements and viaducts are flooded. People have lost thousands of dollars worth of their precious belongings. Most did not have insurance to cover this. People have tried driving through the viaducts and getting stranded. Please say a little prayer and hope good thoughts for the people affected by these horrible rains.

In the many avenues of collecting Black America is most interesting .......... C. Miller produced a limited edition of cookie jars of her family of many moons ago. This is "Grandpa Washington". He comes along with a brief history of his life.

This is Grandma Bell, she was produced in the hey day of cookie jars by C. Miller. This is a relative that was a slave. She comes with a short history.

This is an "Annie Lee" cookie jar called: "Sixty Pounds".........

This is another "Annie Lee" cookie jar called :"Hot water cornbread". This one comes in several sizes, this is the small size. They are no longer being produced.

This is "Amazing Grace" a choir singer produced in the 90's by "Clay Art".

Growing up in the 1950's I remember my mom cooked with a pressure cooker on the stove. When the whistler - knob on top started to wiggle and stream would start blowing out it was time to take it off and I think she turned it off. Hers was a little newer then this one. I picked up this neat old funky pressure cooker a few months ago when I was out searching for more kitchenalia. It's displayed in the "Retro Kitchen Museum" in "Jazz'e Junque Inc."

Prehistoric Cooking ~

I believe this may be one of the very first Sunbeam Mix masters, from the late 1920's. Check out that nasty cloth cord! I picked this honey of a find just about two years ago when I started seriously looking for unique kitchenalia items. It may still work. But I was not brave enough to plug it in.
